The opportunity to work remotely appeared with the development of the Internet, when participants in the intellectual labor market realized that it was possible to transfer the results of work and receive new tasks using a computer and a global network, without having to sit at a specific table in a specific office.

Building software for startups is a big undertaking. Not because writing software itself is difficult, but because most startups have far from optimal places to do this kind of work. In my more than 10 years of experience as a startup software developer, I have learned to distrust employers' ability to provide me with an adequate work environment, and this prevents me from doing the best job for them. I am, by nature, ambitious, energetic, and I do not want anything more than to give out at the place where I work, the best that i can... I give myself 100% to the company I work for. But in most places where I have worked, a lot has been done to prevent me from doing so. That is why at some point in time I took a clear position: from now on, I will only work “remotely”.

Open offices

Most startups nowadays are obsessed with the idea of an open office environment, and it is nearly impossible to find companies that do not implement this type of placement. They claim to strive to create an “open and transparent environment,” but if you know anything about the heart of the matter, then you know that this is the worst environment for real work, and does not improve communication or culture in any way. You don't have to look far to find a lot of research on this subject - and frankly, there is simply nothing to discuss here. There is no evidence to support the hypothesis that building an "open office" provides a more collaborative environment. And, of course, office managers, directors, and founders selectively ignore the mountains of evidence to refute this hypothesis.

This is one of the real tragedies of the startup world. It is difficult to assess how many startups are being held back by obsession and conformity with an open office environment. The cost of the mental health of employees who are forced to stay in these insane asylums every day should also be taken into account. While startups continue to swallow, chew, and spit out / burn out young talent, there is very little hope for wisdom in this area to help solve problems like this. Working hours

I am an owl. You can tell me that I have to sit in a chair within your line of sight at 8 or 9 in the morning, but trust me, it will be very wasteful. You will waste my time and yours. I'm not a morning person. I start working at full strength only after 11 in the morning and actually get down to business in the afternoon or evening. It is a vicious cycle that is extremely detrimental to my mental health and living conditions. This is an area where science is very clear: people are "larks" and "owls." The employer must accept his employees as they are and optimize the working conditions according to their abilities. I feel like an owl, I have always been an owl and I will always be an owl. I tried to work in the morning - it was a waste of time, because at this time of day my productivity is low and I make more mistakes. Now I am only willing to consider job offers where I can manage my own working hours. This does not mean that I am a lazy person or a bum. Not at all - it upsets me when I can't get my best performance out of the way, and so from now on I won't accept anything other than this approach.

Who is against ROWE?

The ROWE (Results-Only Work Environment) is a fantastic system to use wherever employees are processing information. It is necessary to measure the products given out by employees, not the amount of time they spend in the office. I refuse to work in places with such a cynical view of my employees. If you truly believe that your employees won't work, if you can't look over their shoulder at the display for control, then you have the wrong approach to the relationship with your employees (especially in a startup). It is necessary to hire people who are passionate about their work and believe in the mission of the company. If your employees relax when you are not watching them, then this means that your company has a disease and you have discovered a symptom of it. It is impossible to suppress this symptom and expect the disease to be cured. More on this later (remove support systems and let problem workers show up).

In the case of working from home / teleworking, some employees may not be able to work well from home or they just don't like it. That's great - but you have to trust your employees and treat them accordingly, like adults. Let them make decisions for themselves. Remove support (such as the extra wheels on a children's bicycles) and allow them to fall. If they cannot succeed when no one interferes in their affairs, then why do you think that they will work successfully with a nanny?

Employees' attitudes towards work do not improve when they are constantly monitored by their supervisor. Rather, the opposite is true.
