How to properly and beautifully hem a tulle at home

Being engaged in decor, many housewives are faced with the need to hem the curtains. Sometimes hemming is necessary due to the natural wear of the fabric, when the corner has acquired an unaesthetic appearance, but the curtain as a whole looks good. Today, the question of how to hem a tulle can be confusing, this is due to the fact that modern housewives rarely produce accessories used in interior design with their own hands at home.

Also, knowing how to properly sew tulle curtains will help correct the shortcomings of the product purchased in the store, since they are made according to a certain pattern, therefore, they do not always fit the existing window opening in length. It is also necessary to hem the tulle when replacing the cornices, because it is not always possible to find a completely identical option.

You can quickly and efficiently make hemming with your own hands using a sewing machine. However, it is not always available for use, so it is important to know how to do this operation using a thread and a needle.

Particular attention should be paid to the edges of the curtains. There are several simple rules, following which, even at home, you can achieve quality comparable to the work of a professional. The first thing to do is to choose a thread that matches the tone of the main fabric; for tulle, this is most often white. If the curtains are made from a combination of fabrics or inserts from bulk materials are used, then before performing the main hemming, problem areas should be treated with a special seam called a “zigzag”. If it is planned to be performed on a sewing machine, then it is recommended to select the maximum step.

Another tip that will help make tulle curtains perfect is to use a special hidden seam when hemming the hem - one warp thread is captured with a needle. In order to do it yourself was as simple as possible, you can use the special function on the sewing machine.

The hem must be swept away, then the work will be done efficiently and beautifully.

When doing the work with your own hands, it is best to give preference to long and not too dense stitches in the process of overcasting the edges, and the use of pins will also not be superfluous. After this stage, the curtain needs to be ironed slightly. To avoid distortions, you can apply a little trick - pin the fabric with pins, for example, to an ironing board. Small weights will help to avoid wrinkles, by tying them, you can stretch the fabric. For tulle curtains, a special cord is suitable as a weighting agent, which must be evenly distributed along the entire length of the hem. The ideal distance for attaching the cord is 25 cm.

Do-it-yourself hemming: stages of work

The first step is ironing the tulle curtains. Then they must be placed on the window opening. After that, you can proceed to the main work, which begins with the measurement process - this is necessary in order to know the length of the curtain and identify the place where the hemming will be done.

Double hem is the most popular method for working with tulle curtains. The allowance will be 7-8 cm on each side and the same distance should be added to the length of the curtain.

  • cutting line;
  • curtain line.

Excess fabric should be carefully cut off, then tuck in the allowance and sweep the resulting hem with your own hands. The next step is ironing, which will help remove all possible defects on the fabric. After that, it's time to process the tulle curtain with a blind seam.

First, the bottom of the curtain is processed, and then its sides.

If a stitch is selected with a sewing machine, then straight stitching should be preferred. The stitch length should be about 2.5-3 cm. You can also process using a zigzag.

After that, the hem is turned inside out on the “face” so that it protrudes only slightly - no more than 3 mm. The fabric is swept and sewn with light movements, capturing the edge of the curtain. It is noteworthy that the thread will not be noticeable at all in the end.

Seamless hem

When hemming tulle curtains with your own hands, you can apply a secret that will not leave even a light seam on it - this method is called “seamless hemming”. It is carried out using ordinary adhesive tape or "cobweb" applied along the entire length of the curtain. For fixing, it is necessary to use a hot iron, which slightly irons the junction of the fabric.

If the tulle base has a lining, then it is important to remember, when hemming with your own hands, that the work is done without taking into account the lining, that is, only the base is sewn, because otherwise the seam line will turn out to be thick. You should leave an allowance of 12-13 cm and cut the curtain. The lining is cut so that it becomes 12 cm shorter than the base. In order for the corners of the curtain to turn out even, it is required to make a side seam of the fabric. Then the lining needs to be ironed and double folded - by 5 and 7 cm, unscrewed and sewn to the lining. The blind seam in this case is performed by a single hem of the tulle curtain and lining, stitching them together using a straight stitch.

Sometimes you can make work using decorative elements, such as ribbons, braid or fringe. Also perform a double hem of the lower part of the tulle. Thus, knowing all the ways of hemming tulle curtains, you can make the perfect decor for the window and the room as a whole with your own hands. As you can see, there is nothing complicated in the work, you need to show a little attention and not rush anywhere during work, then the result will be worthy of praise.
